The Surrender Process

At Labrador Retriever Rescue, we know that making the decision to give up a Lab isn’t easy. We’re here to make the process as painless as possible. Following are the steps for surrendering a Lab to LRR.

  1. Surrender application. Start by filling out and submitting the Surrender Application.
  2. Evaluation. After we receive your application and the completed form from your veterinarian, we will review your materials and get back to you within a few days. We will need to evaluate the dog before it can be accepted into our program. If your Lab is accepted, we will call you to schedule an appointment for your Lab to go to a foster home.
  3. Foster home. In one of our approved foster homes, your Lab will have frequent human attention, supervised play with other Labs in a fenced-in area, dog toys to play with, and adequate exercise. Throughout your Lab’s foster stay, we will monitor temperament and behavior to help him or her find the right new home.
  4. Permanent home. Before an adoption, we consider the history, temperament, personality, and energy level of the rescue Lab for placement in a particular home. The placement process includes a written application from the potential adopter and a home visit by one of our adoption volunteers. Adopters have come back to us for their second and even third dog, which speaks well for the process and the experience.
